36V, Dual, 1.6A Synchronous Step-Down LED Driver with I2C Dimming Control

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) announces the LT3964 Power by Linear ™, a dual, 36V, high efficiency, synchronous, step-down LED driver with internal 40V, 1.6 A power switch and an I2C interface, simplifying LED dimming control. Operating over a wide input range of 4V to 36V, the LT3964 offers two independently controlled LED drivers that switch at up to 2MHz, making it possible to form a highly integrated, compact solution with small external components.

The LT3964 operates with fixed-frequency, current-mode control and operates as a constant-current and constant-voltage source with accurate current regulation to provide optimal LED lighting in automotive, industrial and architectural lighting applications. Both channels at full current load, synchronous operation can produce more than 94% efficiency.

The device's 400kHz I2C interface greatly simplifies digital PWM dimming. Instead of providing the PWM signal from the microcontroller to the LED driver, the internal registers are set with the desired dimming duty cycle, which is synchronized to the internal clock. This provides a dimming ratio of up to 8192: 1 and eliminates the beat frequency caused when the PWM signal and the internal oscillator are out of sync. Alternatively, the ratio of control voltage to LED current can be set using an 8-bit scale factor that can be set via I2C when emulating dimming to allow greater control over analog dimming adjustments. The device also offers 1000: 1 external PWM dimming and 10: 1 analog dimming.

The switching frequency of the LT3964 can be set from 200kHz to 2MHz, or it can be synchronized to an external clock signal. LED driver protection features include open-circuit LED and short-circuit LED fault detection, and LED over-current and over-voltage detection, all available through the I2C interface. Overheating shutdown provides an extra layer of protection.

The LT3964EUHE is available in a thermally enhanced 36-lead 5mm x 6mm QFN package. Available in 3 temperature versions, the extended and industrial temperature versions operate over the -40 ° C to 125 ° C (junction temperature) temperature range and the high temperature versions are available in
-40 ° C to 150 ° C range of operation.
