Digital Power System Manager Supports Conversion Efficiency Monitoring

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) announced the introduction of the Power by LinearTM LTC2972, a dual-channel power system manager that monitors the current, power, and power consumption of intermediate bus inputs to point-of-load (POL) converters. Monitoring board power and energy usage is the first step in managing, optimizing, and reducing power consumption. It is designed to reduce server rack and data center cooling and utility costs. The LTC2972 conveniently provides input energy consumption (reported in joules) and run-time information through a PMBus interface, sharing host's heavy polling and computing tasks. When combined with digital measurements of the POL output voltage, current, and power, the LTC2972 provides long-term monitoring of power system conversion efficiency. The LTC2972 adds software-based, comprehensive monitoring and control to power systems on FPGAs, ASICs, and DSP circuit boards, accelerating time to market, improving system reliability, and optimizing board power consumption.

The device uses a best-in-class 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with 0.25% total unadjusted error (TUE) to fine-tune, margin, and monitor the output voltage of the power supply to increase board yield and long-term performance. The power output current is measured with a sense resistor, inductor DCR, or the IMON output of the power supply. Power sequencing, monitoring, and EEPROM fault logging are built-in. Fault triggering The EEPROM black box recording function, while simplifying fault analysis, also provides in-depth information for future system improvements. Each channel has a programmable power good, or general purpose input/output (GPIO) pin. The LTC2972 is connected to other power system managers to coordinate the sequencing and fault management of more than two rails.

The LTC2972 is specified over the commercial temperature range of 0°C to 70°C and the industrial temperature range of −40°C to 105°C and is available in a 44-pin 6mm x 7mm QFN package.
