Intersil Introduces Battery Charger to Extend Spare Battery Life for Auto Emergency Call System

Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq: ISIL) announced the launch of the 3.6V single-cell battery charger, the ISL78693, which extends the life of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries used in automotive automatic emergency call (eCall) systems. The leakage current of the ISL78693 battery charger is one-quarter (3uA) of competing products, extending the power supply time of the eCall system backup battery. Intersil will be showcasing the ISL78693 at the E30-11 booth at the Automotive World in Tokyo, Japan, January 18-20, 2017.

Now, global automakers are installing eCall in V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure) systems. In the event of a car collision, the eCall system can automatically broadcast its location via GPS and contact the nearest 24-hour emergency call center for help. Therefore, the V2I eCall system must be able to use the backup battery immediately for reliable and autonomous operation, even when an accident occurs shortly after the car is parked for a few months.

The ISL78693 battery charger supports emerging eCall systems around the world, such as Japan's D-Call Net test system, which automatically transmits vehicle data to emergency call centers so they can assess the severity of the collision and dispatch ground or air ambulance teams. Save lives and save valuable time. The European eCall program can also provide rapid assistance to drivers in the event of a collision. In addition, Russia's ERA-GLONASS and the US OnStar® provide security and ambulance calling services.

The ISL78693's battery temperature monitoring and 3.6V low output voltage help protect popular lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries and extend their battery life. The ISL78693 is much simpler and easier to use than competing products, requiring only five external passive components to program the full charging platform. The ISL78693's tiny 3mm x 3mm DFN package is easy to install on PCBs with limited space for robust and small form factor designs.
