Linear introduces circuit protection controller LTC4368

Linear introduces the LTC4368 circuit protection controller, which guarantees safe voltage and current levels for 2.5V to 60V electronics in battery-powered automotive, industrial and portable systems. The LTC4368 replaces fuses, transient voltage suppressors, and discrete circuits to provide a compact and comprehensive solution for protecting electronic circuits from harmful overcurrents and damage from overvoltage, undervoltage, and reverse voltage conditions. The LTC4368 controls the back-to-back N-channel MOSFETs to provide a low-loss current path during normal operation, turning them off in the event of a forward or reverse overcurrent fault. The LTC4368-1 circuit breaker provides symmetrical forward and reverse current thresholds to protect the battery from excessive charging and discharge currents. The LTC4368-2 circuit breaker trips when a reverse current is detected to prevent backfeed and maintain output.

The LTC4368 quickly disconnects the load from an input voltage that exceeds an adjustable and precise overvoltage threshold. The adjustable undervoltage lockout function disables operation at low input voltages, thereby avoiding deep discharge of the battery. Reverse power protection isolates the load from the battery with the wrong polarity when plugged in, eliminating the need to route a diode in the circuit path. The elimination of the diode drop and the 2.5V operating voltage provide sufficient margin for the safe start of the car. The device current consumption is only 80μA during normal operation and 5μA in shutdown mode, which extends battery operation and standby time. In addition, the LTC4368 can also control inrush current during hot swapping of board power.

The LTC4368 is available in two versions, the LTC4368-1 provides a 50mV reverse circuit breaker detection threshold, and the LTC4368-2 has a 3mV reverse threshold. After an overcurrent fault occurs, it is determined by the pin configuration whether the MOSFET is latched off or turned on after a delay. The LTC4368 is specified for commercial applications from 0oC to 70oC, –40oC to 85oC industrial, and −40oC to 125oC automotive temperature, in 10-pin MSOP and 3mm x 3mm DFN packages.
