Linear Introduces Multiphase Synchronous Boost DC/DC Controller LTC3897

Linear introduces the LTC3897, a multiphase synchronous boost DC/DC controller with an input surge suppressor and an ideal diode controller. The boost controller drives two N-channel power MOSFET stages out of phase to reduce input and output capacitor requirements, allowing the use of inductors that are smaller than comparable single-phase solutions.

Synchronous rectification increases efficiency, reduces power loss and reduces thermal requirements. An input surge suppressor with adjustable clamp voltage controls the gate of an N-channel MOSFET to protect the device from high input voltage transients above 100V and provides inrush current control and overcurrent protection And output disconnect function. An integrated ideal diode controller drives another N-channel MOSFET for input voltage reverse protection and voltage hold or peak detection.

The LTC3897 is ideal for automotive, industrial, and medical systems where a step-up DC/DC converter is required to efficiently deliver high power in a small solution size. For example, the LTC3897 can be configured to regulate a 24V/10A output from a car battery (12V) with up to 97% efficiency.

The 55μA low quiescent current of the LTC3897 during Burst Mode® further extends battery life and minimizes power consumption at light loads. The LTC3897 itself operates from an input voltage range of 4.5V to 65V with a peak of 75V. The device regulates an output voltage of up to 60V, while the powerful built-in adjustable 5V to 10V gate driver can quickly convert large logic levels or standard threshold MOSFET gates.
