Vicor Introduces 12 - 48V NBM Module on GTC 2018

A few days ago, Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ Stock Exchange code: VICR) announced the introduction of a 12 to 48V non-isolated boost converter to provide 48V high-performance GPU support for data centers that still rely on traditional 12V power distribution.

The 2317 NBM can convert 12V to 48V with more than 98% peak efficiency. The product is packaged in a 23 x 17 x 7.4 mm surface-mount SM-ChiP package and supports 750W of constant power and 1kW of peak power. NBM (NBM2317S14B5415T00) provides a complete solution that requires neither an external input filter nor a large capacitor. It uses ZVS and ZCS to achieve a switching frequency of 2 MHz, providing low output impedance for dynamic loads and fast transient response at MHz level. In addition, NBM also integrates hot-swap and inrush current limiting technologies.

NBM supports the industry's most advanced 48V input GPU with power-seal technology. This technology transfers 48V directly to the GPU through the current multiplication module MCM with a small 1/48th scale factor. The current multiplication technology overcomes the problems of high bandwidth and low connection impedance encountered in traditional 12V systems in power transmission.

Vicor's combined power modules are based on fractional power architecture (FPA) systems deployed in high-performance computers and large data centers. For GPUs, CPUs, and ASICs that require 1,000A, FPA not only provides efficient power distribution, but also converts voltage directly from 48V to 1V. PoP MCMs can achieve higher performance and system efficiency by deploying current multiplication techniques in locations close to high-current artificial intelligence (AI) processors.
