Vishay's new direct water-cooled winding resistance series can save space and improve reliability

Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) announced that it has introduced a new series of direct water-cooled wirewound resistors, DCRF, which provides ultra-high power consumption of 9000W with little external radiation. The Vishay MCB DCRF series devices are available in six compact sizes from 38 mm × 178 mm to 38 mm × 410 mm. This series is designed to save space and increase reliability compared to standard wire wound resistors.

At the same size, today's published resistors can easily handle 10 times the power of natural cooling devices, or 2 times the power of indirect water-cooled devices. By replacing multiple components with one resistor, the DCRF series allows designers to reduce costs, simplify layout and reduce the size of their final product. The modular structure of the device supports multiple resistor core options.

The resistance core of DCRF series devices is in direct contact with water and insulated by ceramic tubes, eliminating the need for an additional heat sink. The resistor cores are optimized for load, filter, snubber, and discharge resistor applications and can be used in industrial applications such as large drives, HVDC, and battery management systems. There is limited or little external radiation in the resistor, and reliability can be increased by limiting the surface temperature, while the safe failure mode prevents radiation leakage when the flow is turned off. These devices can withstand twice the rated power overload in less than 60 seconds.

The DCRF series has a low inductance value (<500 nH for models DCRF 38 x178, 4.7 W resistance) and offers resistance options from 0.56W to 27W with tolerances down to ± 5%. Resistive devices have a rated power range of 1500 W to 9000 W, an inlet temperature of 65 °C and a flow rate of 8.33 l/min (deionized water, conductivity < 2 μS/cm). Resistors are RoHS compliant and do not contain lead (Pb) and provide a typical temperature coefficient of 100 ppm/°C and operate over a temperature range of -55°C to +120°C.
