2.7V to 38V/500mA Low Noise Buck-Boost-Charge Pump Saves Space and Reduces EMI

Linear Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), introduces the LTC3246, a compact, low noise buck-boost charge pump with integrated watchdog timing It can deliver up to 500mA of output current. The LTC3246 uses multimode switched capacitor conversion to maintain a stable input voltage range of 2.7V to 38V and produces a stable 3.3V, 5V or externally adjustable (2.5V to 5V) output. The internal circuitry automatically selects a 2:1, 1:1, or 1:2 conversion ratio to optimize efficiency as input voltage and load conditions change. Low operating current (20μA regulation at no load, 1.5μA at shutdown), low EMI switching, and few external components (3 small ceramic capacitors, no inductors) make the LTC3246 ideal for noise-sensitive space-constrained automotive applications For example, ECU/CAN transceiver power supplies, as well as industrial housekeeping power supplies and high efficiency, low power 12V to 5V conversion.

Compared to conventional switching regulators, the LTC3246's switched capacitor architecture has inherent soft switching for lower radiated noise and EMI. Timing controls for reset timeouts and windowed watchdog timeouts can be adjusted with external capacitors on the RT and WT pins, or internally by pin bonding. The exact threshold of the reset input can be used for additional power monitoring or can be configured as a button reset. Other features include the use of ceramic capacitors for stable, foldback current limiting to prevent excessive current during startup, and short-circuit and over-temperature protection.

The LTC3246 is available in a compact, thermally enhanced, 16-lead MSOP package. Class E and Class I versions have a working junction temperature range of –40°C to 125°C, Class H has a working junction temperature range of –40°C to 150°C, and Class MP is specified for a temperature range of –55°C to 150°C Running inside.
