40VIN, 2A Silent Switcher μModule Regulator in a 6.25mm × 4mm BGA Package

Linear Technology Corporation, a member of Analog Devices, Inc., introduced the 40V, 2A μModule® (power module) step-down regulator, the LTM8063, featuring a tiny device. 25mm × 4mm BGA package. The package size is 75% smaller than the existing equivalent. The solution uses two 0805 size capacitors and two 0603 size resistors, occupying only 70mm2 of board area.

The LTM8063 provides 2A (2.5A peak) continuous output current at 12VIN to 5VOUT conversion and 85°C ambient temperature conditions. The device's 40V input voltage allows it to use unregulated or fluctuating 12V to 24V input power, and can safely operate in noisy environments such as avionics, factory automation and industrial robots. The output voltage can be adjusted with a resistor from 0.8V to 15V. This wide output voltage range provides the versatility of using a product to generate low voltage rails (eg, digital ICs with I/O and auxiliary voltages) and common system bus voltages of 3.3V, 5V, and 12V.

The device's switching frequency can be set in the 200kHz to 2.2MHz range with a single external resistor or synchronized to an external clock. The combination of Silent Switcher architecture, a wide operating frequency range, and multiple operating modes minimizes the risk of electromagnetic interference and is ideally suited for noise-sensitive signal processing applications such as imaging and RF systems.

The LTM8063 operates over the temperature range of −40°C to 125°C.
