Active rectifier controller with reverse protection

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), Inc. announces the LT8672, a Power by Linear ™ active rectifier controller that features reverse input protection to -40V. Its 3V to 42V input voltage capability is well suited for automotive applications. These applications have a minimum input voltage down to 3.0V and a dropover transient of up to 40V, which must always be stable with cold crank and stop-start conditions. Driving an external N-channel MOSFET with a 20mV dropout, the LT8672 consumes 90% less power than Schottky diodes, eliminating the need for costly heatsinks. Automotive applications require AC input ripple rectification up to 100kHz, and the extremely fast transient response of the device enables it to meet demanding automotive applications. In addition, a 20μA quiescent current during run-time and a 3.5μA current at shutdown are perfect for always-on systems. The combination of MSOP-10 package and external MOSFET ensures a compact solution footprint.

The LT8672's solution offers 3V minimum input capability and 20mV dropout to provide simpler and more efficient circuitry with minimum input voltage requirements for cold start and stop-start conditions. If the input power fails or is shorted, the device can be quickly opened, minimizing reverse current transients. In addition, the power good flag pin signals when the external MOSFET is ready to accept the load current.

The LT8672EMS is available in the MSOP-10 package. The LT8672IMS industrial temperature grade version has been tested and guaranteed to operate over the operating junction temperature range of -40 ° C to 125 ° C. The LT8672HMS version is also tested to ensure operation over the -40 ° C to 150 ° C operating junction temperature range.
