Allegro MicroSystems, LLC announces the introduction of a new high-accuracy Hall-effect current sensor IC, the ACS720, with a variety of programmable fault levels for industrial and consumer applications, especially in applications such as motor control and power inverter stages. A major advantage of the Allegro ACS720 is its ability to provide the high isolation required with a small bill of material through a proprietary IC SOIC-16W package. The ACS720 operates from a single 5V supply and maintains an output voltage swing of 0 to 3V with a stable zero-current output of 1.5V. This way, when the ACS720 is operating on a 5V supply, its output can support a typical 3.3V ADC on many MCUs. In addition, the high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of the ACS720 can suppress power supply noise in PCBs or systems, maintaining high accuracy in high noise environments.
The ACS720 device has a user-configurable double-fault feature, with fast and slow fault outputs for short-circuit and over-current fault detection. A user-created resistor divider from the ACS720 power supply can be used to set the fault level. The fault output is an open drain, allowing the user to pull it up to the MCU-compatible voltage. The open-drain output also allows a simple, logical OR of multiple sensor fault outputs.
The ACS720 also integrates differential current sensing, which suppresses external magnetic fields and greatly simplifies board layout in three-phase motor applications. Thanks to Allegro's patented digital temperature compensation technology, close-loop precision can be achieved in this open-loop sensor IC, providing a smaller, more economical solution for current sensing applications that traditionally rely on closed-loop technology sensors. Affordable solution.
The ACS720 is available in a small surface-mount SOIC16 package. The lead frame is 100% matte tin plated and is compatible with standard lead-free printed circuit board assembly processes. Inside the device, the device is also lead-free, except for flip-chip high-temperature lead-based solder balls that are exempt from RoHS. The ACS720 device is fully calibrated at the factory.
