Ames Semiconductor Introduces NFC Smart Sensor ICs for Traceable, Accurate and One-Time Wireless Temperature Loggers

Monday, December 18, 2017

Powered by a single, thin print cell, the AS39513 acquires and stores time-stamped temperature measurements ideal for smart labels in cold chain monitoring

Ams AG, a leading global provider of high-performance sensor solutions, today announced the AS39513, an NFC sensor tag and data logger IC that can be used in smart labels to enable the detection of food, pharmaceutical and healthcare Product storage and transportation in the process of more efficient and accurate monitoring.

The new device is a complete digital sensor with an NFC front-end for easy integration into smart tags. Any authorized NFC reader, such as a smartphone or tablet, can read the unique ID stored in its internal memory as well as the recorded temperature and other data.

AS39513-based smart labels enable manufacturers, carriers and retailers to make detailed data records of the status of individual packages in transit and verify that perishable goods such as fresh food are intact upon arrival.

The AS39513 provides a complete solution for temperature monitoring and NFC connectivity including an NFC front-end, a temperature sensor, and an analog interface to an external sensor. Other features integrated on the chip include a real-time clock, a 10-bit ADC, a configurable data logging engine, a 9kbit password-protected EEPROM and a serial peripheral interface (SPI) to an external microcontroller. The AS39513 is available in either a bump die or a chip size package with a thickness of only 0.3mm.

Powered by a single cell (standard 1.5V) or dual battery (3V), the AS39513 can store 1,020 time-stamped sensor measurements. The product is fully compliant with the ISO15693 and NFC-V (T5T) standards and can be read by NFC phones within a few centimeters. Using a dedicated ISO15693 reader extends the reading range to 1-2 meters, allowing multiple AS39513 tags to be read simultaneously in a cupboard or refrigerator.

The new AS39513 replaces the Amicus SL13A sensor tag with better temperature sensor performance and provides ± 0.5 ° C accuracy over the critical -20 ° C to 10 ° C range, from -20 ° C to Accuracy of ± 1 ° C over the extended 55 ° C range.

The AS39513 incorporates a temperature sensor and is ideally suited for smart labels used in cold chains to monitor products such as food, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. It also features the ams Cools Log ™ engine for full control and configuration of logging modes and timing. Triggering methods for temperature measurement include regular triggering, triggering when the temperature exceeds a set threshold, or triggering by an external device.

The Cool-Log engine is one of the major innovations of the AS39513 with operational flexibility and very low power consumption without the need for a microprocessor. In standby mode, the AS39513 uses only 2μA of current and can autonomously record temperature data for more than a year under a single 30mAh battery supply [1]. This superior low-power performance enables the use of smaller, cheaper batteries and paves the way for a farm-to-table commodity labeling application. Operating in passive mode, the chip draws energy from the reader's RF field to deliver up to 4mA (1.8V) to external circuitry.

Giancarlo Cutrignelli, Head of Business Marketing, Wireless Sensor Business, AMMIS, said: "The AS39513 is a fully integrated smart wireless sensor that enables manufacturers, carriers and retailers to verify that medicines, foods and other products are properly stored and shipped. It allows related businesses in the supply chain to have a detailed record of temperature and other conditions stored in a single package and reject shipped items if necessary. "

"In addition, the use of modern RFID assembly processes and printed batteries can help customers reduce manufacturing costs and meet the most stringent environmental regulations, such as RoHS, REACH and EU Directive 2006/66 / EC, enabling smart sensor tags to be truly single-use It's eco-friendly, "added Giancarlo Cutrignelli.
