Analog Devices Introduces +48V Hot Swap Controller with Integrated Digital Power Monitoring

ADI today announced the ADM1272, an innovative +48V hot-swap controller and PMBusTM power monitor. Designed for high voltage system control up to 80V, the ADM1272 provides reliable patch panel protection in mission critical systems such as servers and communications equipment. Advanced system control and board power monitoring provide superior protection against system failure and system reset from transient voltages up to 120V, minimizing system downtime and increasing system availability under all conditions.

The ADM1272's Adaptive Safe Operating Area (SOA) protection greatly improves overall system reliability and MOSFET protection. With SOA protection, you can use smaller, lower cost MOSFETs than traditional hot-swap controller solutions. Other performance optimization features include a PMBus digital interface that provides real-time telemetry and fault status information to the system.

Like many communication infrastructures, high availability and reliability are key components of system design in the data center. Pluggable modules/PCBs (such as servers and memories) require protection and control circuitry at the power entry point, commonly referred to as hot-swap control circuitry. The ADM1272 hot-swap controller is designed for supply voltages from 16V to 80V and supports secure plugging and unplugging of boards on live backplanes without the need to turn off the power.

The ADM1272 also provides system protection for faults such as overcurrent events, voltage transients, and short circuits. Other features include an integrated 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for current, voltage, power, and power readback through the PMBus interface. The hot-swap controller withstands voltages up to 120V with surge and transient protection to avoid system reset problems common to high voltage systems and is extremely reliable. The package meets the true high voltage (80V) IPC-9592 standard.
