Analog Devices Introduces Integrated Isolated Power Controller Family

Thursday, September 6, 2018

ADI today announced a series of isolated pulse width modulation (PWM) controllers (3 in total) with integrated 5kV isolation, all using ADI's award-winning iCoupler® technology. The ADP1071-1 and ADP1071-2 are isolated synchronous flyback controllers, while the ADP1074 is an isolated synchronous active clamp forward controller. They integrate multiple functions that typically require several discrete components, such as overvoltage protection (OVP), output tracking, and light load modes for improved energy efficiency, as well as SR drivers, compared to traditional methods using optocouplers. Save up to 35% and greatly improve system reliability. The new PWM controller is designed for isolated DC/DC power supplies for general purpose input offline, industrial or telecom power supplies. Another important feature includes the use of PGOOD for secondary communication to eliminate common isolation barrier constraints while reducing the number of external components.

The new device uniquely integrates the primary and secondary controllers with iCoupler® isolation technology in an easy-to-use package for true secondary sensing, combining all the advantages of the primary and secondary controllers . iCoupler® technology also offers high bandwidth for superior transient response, performance improvements over five times, and output capacitance reductions of more than 20%.

About the ADP1071-1 and ADP1071-2 PWM Controllers

The ADP1071-1 and ADP1071-2 are PWM current mode fixed frequency synchronous flyback controllers designed for isolated DC/DC power supplies. These PWM controllers integrate ADI's proprietary iCoupler® technology to replace large signal transformers and optocouplers, while reducing system design complexity, cost, component count, and overall system reliability. . These PWM controllers integrate isolation and drivers on both the primary and secondary sides, providing a compact system-level design that is more efficient than a diode-rectified flyback converter under heavy loads. The ADP1071-1 is suitable for high voltage applications (≥60V) and the ADP1071-2 is suitable for low voltage applications (≤60V). The ADP1071-1 and ADP1071-2 are ideal for isolated DC/DC or AC/DC power conversion, small cells, PoE powered devices, and enterprise switches/routers for use in telecom and industrial applications.
