Diodes' three-phase half-bridge gate driver simplifies BLDC and PMSM motor drive

Diodes Corporation introduced the DGD2136, a fully integrated three-phase gate driver IC chip designed to drive N-channel MOSFETs or IGBTs in a half-bridge configuration. Floating-point high-side drivers and bootstrapping allow the DGD2136 to switch up to 600V; standard logic-level inputs down to 2.4V provide a simple control interface. This gate driver is designed for BLDC and PMSM motor drive applications commonly found in home appliances, electric and garden tools, air conditioners, sewing machines and industrial motors.

The increased use of BLDC and PMSM motors reflects the industry policy of improving the efficiency of electric motors and achieving zero maintenance goals with a low total cost of ownership. To meet this requirement, the DGD2136 is optimized for 3-phase applications to drive three half-bridges comprised of N-channel MOSFETs or IGBTs. The high-voltage process allows the floating-point high-side driver to operate at up to 600V while the driver's output also uses a high-pulse current buffer to minimize the transconductance problem of the driver.

The device uses multiple protection mechanisms: sensing of overcurrent through an externa chip resistor to turn off all outputs; and matching propagation delay using internal delay time and breakdown logic that can be used when both inputs are high (fault condition) , Preventing both outputs from going high; the VCC under-voltage lockout turns off individual high-side outputs; the built-in immunity to high dv / dt instants on VS pins minimizes the risk of false triggers. DGD2136 also has fault signal output function, which can be used to monitor the driver stage, and can be used with RC input pin to provide adjustable reset time function.

The DGD2136 gate driver is available in the industry standard SO-28 package.
