Feature-rich Giant Gecko microcontrollers help developers solve complex IoT applications

Friday, June 8, 2018

Silicon Labs' New EFM32GG11 Gecko Family Offers State-of-the-Art Features and Maximum Memory Space for the Low-Power MCU Market

Silicon Labs (also known as “Core Technology”) has expanded its energy-efficient industrial-grade microcontroller (MCU) EFM32® Gecko product portfolio to provide higher performance, more features and lower power consumption.

The increasingly complex use of Internet of Things (IoT) applications has driven the need for multiple sensors, complex user interface displays, advanced algorithms, and wireless protocol stacks. As the power budget shrinks, the MCU must also be as energy efficient as possible in sleep mode to maximize battery life.

Tom Pannell, senior marketing director of Silicon Labs’ Internet of Things products, said: “Giant Gecko MCUs provide a user experience that previously only existed on high-power MCUs. Based on Gecko's decade of evolution, the Giant Gecko family of products provides developers with A huge leap in performance, functionality, and design capabilities."

The current-based capacitive sensing engine provides powerful touch inputs and ultra-low power touch wake-ups to simplify the development of capacitive sensing applications.

The Giant Gecko family provides a secure and reliable platform for building applications that use the best encryption algorithms. The series of MCUs have energy-efficient security accelerators that can run advanced algorithms, achieve higher performance and lower power consumption than traditional software methods, and have a Security Management Unit (SMU) to support precise security control of access to peripheral devices. And the NIST-certified True Random Number Generator (TRNG) is used for higher security randomization.
