Highly programmable super timing controller simplifies multi-rail power system management

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) announces the Power by LinearTM ADM1266 Super Sequencer® Super Timing Controller, a highly programmable device that monitors, gates, and margins up to 17 power supplies. For the case of a large number of power rails, 16 ADM1266s can be operated synchronously with a proprietary two-wire inter-device bus. The built-in timing control engine monitors each power failure detector, general purpose inputs/outputs, and timers to turn the power on and off at user-determined timing. All configurations are implemented through the intuitive ADI Power Studio graphical user interface, reducing design time. The ADM1266 provides a highly flexible and simple solution for managing complex power systems on FPGAs, ASICs, and processor boards in network routers, switches, servers, and data storage systems.

The ADM1266 integrates an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and nine voltage-output digital-to-analog converters (DACs) that regulate the feedback nodes or references of the DC/DC converter to implement a closed-loop auto-mass adjustment system. The non-volatile EEPROM is responsible for recording voltage, time, and fault information based on instructions programmed by the timing control engine to speed up troubleshooting.

The ADM1266 and ADI Power Studio software together form a feature-rich configurable state machine to meet complex timing control needs. Built-in debugging features such as breakpoints and black boxes work in conjunction with the Software Setup Wizard to compress development and debugging time from days to hours. The inter-device bus between multiple ADM1266s ensures that these devices operate as a single device, providing an intuitive design process. The software handles all complex tasks and supports 17 to 257 power rails for a seamless design experience.

The ADM1266 is specified for operation from –40oC to 85oC and is available in a 64-pin 9mm x 9mm LFCSP package.
