
Intersil introduces the industry's smallest isolated RS-485 differential bus transceiver, the ISL32704E, which provides 4Mbps bidirectional data transfer for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The high-speed ISL32704E offers industry-leading immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and common mode transient immunity (CMTI) in a small 4mm x 5mm QSOP package that is 70% smaller than competing devices.
The ISL32704E RS-485 transceiver utilizes giant magnetoresistance (GMR) technology to provide galvanic isolation, freeing the communication bus from common-mode noise generated in factory and building automation environments. The ISL32704E is ideal for device-bus interfaces in IIoT networks for connecting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to meters, robots, motor drives, data acquisition and digital I/O modules. Intersil's ISL32704E GMR isolation has the advantage of lower radiated emissions and lower EMI susceptibility than other isolation technologies. In addition, its GMR isolation eliminates the need for complex coding schemes, which are not possible with capacitive and transformer-based isolators that use RF carriers or pulse width modulation (PWM) to transmit DC and low frequency signals across obstacles.
In addition, the ISL32704E consumes 80% less power than competing products because it does not use high-power power transfer coils or transformers. The ISL32704E's 20mA supply current allows it to operate at maximum speed in a small QSOP package without overheating. On the non-isolated control side, the ISL32704E supports direct connection to a 3V microcontroller, while the isolated bus side is connected to a higher voltage 5V supply for high-intensity bus signal transmission over 100 meters and longer.
