Latest PMIC Provides Lowest Standby Power Consumption and High Efficiency for Ear-Wear Products

Today, Maxim announced the MAX77650/MAX77651 power management ICs (PMICs) to help improve battery life and efficiency for Bluetooth® headsets, event monitoring, smart clothing, smartwatches, and other developers with tightly sized devices.

Size is crucial for ear-wear devices and wearable devices. Most PMICs that support small-size, Li-Ion battery-powered devices will also require additional devices such as boost, buck or low-dropout (LDO) regulators, chargers, or current regulators for LED displays. To save space and increase efficiency, Maxim integrated all of the above functions to form a complete power solution with an area of ​​only 19.2mm2 — 1/2 of the current solution size.

The MAX77650 and MAX77651 use a single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) buck-boost architecture that provides three power supplies with a single inductor. Combined with a 150mA LDO and three sink drivers, the MAX77650 and MAX77651 significantly reduce component count and maximize board space available. To increase design flexibility, the MAX77650 and MAX77651 support up to 3.3V and 5V, respectively. Both devices include a multiplex (MUX) output to ensure reliable monitoring of the battery voltage, ideal for low-power designs.
