Linear Technology Introduces Enhanced LTC2862A LTC2862

Extremely rugged RS485 transceiver meets IEC Level 4 ESD requirements

Linear Technology Corporation has introduced the LTC2862A enhanced version of the LTC2862, a ±60V tolerant RS485/RS422 transceiver that was introduced several years ago and has been widely adopted. The two half-duplex transceivers protect the actual RS485 system against cross-line faults, ground faults, or lightning-induced surge voltages during installation, eliminating on-site faults without the need for expensive external protection devices. Faults can cause overvoltage conditions that exceed the absolute maximum ratings of a typical transceiver. Both devices operate within the 3V to 5.5V supply voltage range while maintaining TIA/EIA-485-A compliance. However, the LTC2862A offers higher performance specifications, including unprecedented ±40kV human body model (HBM) and IEC Level4 ESD ratings, resulting in higher ESD protection and noise immunity compared to its predecessor, providing higher performance Ruggedness and signal integrity.

The LTC2862A provides very useful protection and reliability for a variety of RS485/RS422 applications, including industrial control, instrumentation networks, and automotive electronics applications. The LTC2862A is capable of withstanding any voltage within ±60V and is not damaged, whether the circuit is transmitting, receiving, in standby, or powered off. The extended ±25V input common-mode range increases operational reliability and extends functional effectiveness to environments with high common-mode voltages. A fully symmetrical receiver threshold ensures good duty cycle symmetry at low signal levels, and additional filtering capabilities prevent errors due to high frequency noise, providing optimal full fail-safe operation. Significantly improved ESD protection allows the LTC2862A to withstand ±40kV HBM on the transceiver pins (IEC-61000-4-2 ESD Level 4:±8kV) without latchup or damage; all other pins are protected against Withstands ±15kV HBM. The LTC2862A also provides ±5kV protection for Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) with IEC 610004-4 EFT Level 4.
