Maxim Introduces Industry's First Efficient, Highly Integrated 15W MAX14748 USB Type-C Charge and Charger Detection Solution to Help Designers Easily and Effectively Implement USB Type-C with 2-Cell Li-Ion Battery Packs ™ portable devices to charge quickly and safely. Current market solutions require patchwork of different ICs. The charger's interview solves these cumbersome issues, and designers simply focus on how to take full advantage of the USB Type-C features in their designs.

From wireless microphones to high-end cameras, VR headsets and even motorized medical devices, the USB Type-C connector offers a simple solution for charging and streaming multimedia data in a variety of applications. These applications are usually powered by 2 tandem cells, which also need to be recharged to provide sufficient power. So far, developing USB Type-C products powered by 2 tandem battery packs requires multiple external discrete components, adding not only bill of materials (BOM) costs but also additional points of failure in the circuit.

The MAX14748 simplifies design by integrating a charger, USB Type-C charger detection, 28V overvoltage protection and power supply circuitry in a single chip. Highly integrated solution Compatible with traditional USB BC1.2 charging and other non-standard charging requirements, USB Type-C charging power up to twice the Micro USB solution. Programmable Auto Input Current Limiting (AICL) function ensures the safety of the maximum charge adapter to the maximum current protection of expensive end equipment. With the MAX14748, Maxim continues to expand its power-supply portfolio to meet unique USB Type-C application requirements. Already available include the MAX77756 24V input, 500mA buck regulator, the MAX17205 Standalone ModelGauge ™ m5 with SHA-256 safety certification, and the MAX20323 CC pin overvoltage protection.

The main advantage

Reduce Power Management Sizing: Unlike traditional charging solutions, the MAX14748 integrates a charger detector, a buck-boost converter, and a Li-Ion battery charger with an intelligent power selector to minimize discrete components in a single chip.

Fast, Secure Charging: The MAX14748 charges a 2-cell Li-Ion battery in series using a traditional 5V USB adapter and its AICL feature prevents overshoot.

Additional Protection Features Available: The MAX14748 features 28V integrated overvoltage protection, JEITA charging protection, and ± 15kV ESD protection on the USB adapter pins.
