The MCP2517FD allows users to easily switch to enhanced CAN FD and benefit from it
Microchip Technology Inc. announced today that it is providing the industry's first external CAN Flexible Data Rate (CAN FD) controller. With the MCP2517FD, designers can quickly upgrade from CAN 2.0 to CAN FD, benefiting from the CAN FD enhancement protocol.
CAN FD has many advantages over traditional CAN 2.0, including faster data rates and data byte message extensions. Since the application and conversion of CAN FD is still in its infancy, the number of available CAN FD MCUs is still limited. In addition, replacing a system MCU will significantly increase costs and increase development time and risk.
The MCP2517FD also allows designers to easily add more CAN FD channels, which can be used on the MCU.
Rich Simoncic, Vice President of Microchip's Analog, Power and Interface Products Division, said: "The transition from CAN 2.0 to CAN FD has already begun. Many automotive and non-automotive designs will benefit from the CAN FD enhancement protocol. However, designers are choosing their applications The MCP2517FD external CAN FD controller is a viable MCU alternative to help designers maximize the reuse of hardware and firmware to minimize the cost of redesign and Complexity."
