TDK Corporation has developed the industry's first low-ESR soft-terminal laminated ceramic chip capacitors. This new CN series has terminal electrodes with a conductive resin layer, which can provide high mechanical strength and prevent substrate warpage. At the same time, the new laminated ceramic chip capacitors have a low ESR that is comparable to traditional products. CN series capacitors have 2.2 μF to 22 μF and rated voltages from 16 V to 100 V. Based on the X7R dielectric material, both the commercial grade grade and the automotive grade type of the new multilayer ceramic chip capacitors are available. The latter has passed AEC-Q200 certification, while the former will begin mass production and sales from April 2018.
Multi-layer ceramic chip capacitors with soft terminals are able to withstand the stress caused by warpage of the substrate and are an effective method to prevent short circuit in the battery circuit. The traditional design is to coat the electrodes with the resin, but this leads to higher ESR and losses. TDK applies a conductive resin layer only where the terminal electrodes come into contact with the PCB, resulting in a lower ESR. The new CN series has a low terminal electrode resistance, so these laminated ceramic chip capacitors are suitable for battery lines in automotive and industrial robotics applications, helping to improve system reliability. This type of capacitor can also be used in automotive ECUs, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autopilot systems. TDK offers a wide portfolio of laminated ceramic chip capacitors for a wide variety of applications.
