New Silicon Labs Tiny Gecko MCUs Extend IoT Connectivity Device Battery Life
- Ultra-low-power EFM32TM microcontrollers provide safe, feature-rich processing power for energy-sensitive wireless device designs -
Silicon Labs (aka "Core Technologies," NASDAQ: SLAB) has expanded its popular EFM32TM Tiny Gecko microcontroller (MCU) family to meet developers for the next generation of secure, battery-powered IoT ( IoT) design requirements for connecting devices.
The Tiny Gecko 11 MCU is optimized to meet the needs of battery-powered applications that provide cloud connectivity through wireless access points, gateways, and hubs. When used in conjunction with Silicon Labs wireless transceivers, SoCs, or modules in many lightweight wireless applications, Tiny Gecko 11 MCUs can manage applications and wireless connectivity at the same time. When used with complex protocols such as 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi®, Tiny Gecko 11 can be assigned to independently manage MCU applications, simplifying wireless system design.
Based on the ARM® Cortex®-M0+ processor running at 48 MHz, Tiny Gecko 11 MCUs provide sufficient processing power while maintaining extremely high energy efficiency. These MCUs feature low operating current (37μA/MHz), fast wakeup, a range of sleep modes (1.3μA for deep sleep), and other enhanced features and architectures to meet safety and battery-powered IoT products for high performance and low power consumption Design needs.
Tiny Gecko 11 MCUs integrate a range of features that extend the potential of applications:
First-class hardware encryption, support for AES, hash function (SHA), cyclic redundancy check (CRC), energy-efficient true random number generator (TRNG), and security management unit (SMU) for fine device security access
The new Tiny Gecko MCU is software and pin-compatible with other types of EFM32 Gecko, and has a larger flash memory (up to 128kB) and RAM (up to 32kB) than previous Tiny Gecko products, which makes the development feature-rich and supports such as Micrium OS real-time operating system (RTOS) embedded application design becomes easier.
