Linear Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), today introduced the μModule® (Power Module) Step-Down Regulator LTM8065, which accepts input voltages up to 40V (42V Absolute maximum) that can safely operate from a non-regulated or fluctuating 12V to 36V input power supply in a noisy environment, including industrial robots, test and measurement, medical, plant automation and avionics systems The The Silent Switcher® architecture minimizes EMC / EMI emissions, enabling the LTM8065 to meet CISPR 22 Class B requirements for noise-sensitive signal processing applications, including imaging and RF systems. The LTM8065's small 6.25mm x 6.25mm x 2.32mm BGA package includes a switching regulator controller, power switches, inductors and other support components. With only two 0805 capacitors and two 0603 resistors, the LTM8065's solution occupies an area of approximately 100mm2, only half the size of a modular solution with the same power.

The LTM8065 provides a 2.5A continuous (3.5A peak) output current from the 12V input to the 5V load at ambient temperatures up to 85 ° C without the need for a heatsink or airflow. The output voltage can be adjusted with a resistor in the range of 0.97V to 18V. This wide output voltage range provides versatility so that a product can produce 3.3V, 5V, 12V and 15V common system bus voltages. The switching frequency can be adjusted by an external resistor or can be synchronized to an external clock from 200kHz to 3MHz. This allows the customer to run the device within or outside a particular frequency band. The LTM8065 has four modes: Burst Mode® operation, pulse skipping mode, pulse skipping mode with extended spectrum modulation, and external synchronization mode. Burst mode has a quiescent current of 8μA, making the device ideal for battery-operated systems.

The LTM8065 operates over the -40 ° C to 125 ° C temperature range.
