Silicon Labs Radio Product Family Addresses Growing Price-Performance Challenges in the Automotive Industry

Sunday, May 6, 2018

Based on new Silicon Labs products, OEM and post-market radio designs can be extended from low-cost, single-tuner AM/FM radios to high-performance systems with multiple tuners and multiple antennas, enabling car radio suppliers to take advantage of it R&D investment spans multiple product lines, and all product lines can use the same common software API.

According to IHS Markit's statistics, the global light vehicle market will reach 93.5 million units this year, and its radio system is divided into entry-level, mid-level and advanced market segments. In order to satisfy this wide market, radio suppliers have developed different radio systems to meet the various cost targets in the same model. If you use an existing solution, it requires a lot of R&D investment to deal with all market segments of many models. This superior flexibility helps customers reduce design, certification, procurement, and inventory costs.

Analog AM/FM receivers and digital radio tuners The Global Eagle (Si4795x) and Dual Eagle (Si4796x and Si4797x) product families set new standards for scalability and car broadcast reception. The Eagle product family extends the field performance proven tuner and receiver products that Silicon Labs has deployed from leading global automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. The Si479xx devices utilize the low-IF digital architecture of Silicon Labs' patented technology to provide superior RF performance and immunity to interference.

The audio subsystems in both Eagle product families provide a complete solution for car audio systems to synchronize, process, and distribute digital and audio signals. This flexible architecture can also integrate customer or third-party algorithms.

Brian Mirkin, general manager of broadcast products at Silicon Labs, said: "When Silicon Labs launched the first single-chip RF-in-CMOS audio IC 12 years ago, we reduced the number of components by more than 90% and exceeded 60% of the board area. Redefining the design of AM/FM receivers in consumer electronics. To date, Silicon Labs has shipped more than 1.5 billion single-chip radio ICs, including over 50 million OEM car tuners. The latest Global Eagle , Dual Eagle and Digital Falcon product families bring the most advanced and scalable automotive radio system solutions to the industry."
