ST and Sigfox Collaborate to Enable Plug-and-Play IoT Security for Industrial and Consumer Electronics Manufacturers

Sunday, September 16, 2018

STMicroelectronics (ST; New York Stock Exchange: STM) announced that its STSAFE family of security units has added a powerful plug-and-play solution for Sigfox low-power wide-area Internet of Things (LPWAN) devices. Provide advanced security features.

The new STSAFE-A1SX Security Unit (SE) enhances the integrity and confidentiality of IoT devices transmitting data over the Sigfox network based on the Tamper-based Common Criteria EAL5++ certified security unit technology. The security application running on the security unit has been optimized to integrate ST's market-proven banking, e-commerce and identity electronic security technologies with Sigfox's emerging IoT connectivity and data communication technologies.

The STSAFE-A1SX is a tiny, cost-effective security chip solution that connects IoT hardware microcontrollers through a Smart Interface Controller (I2C). At ST's secure personalization center, device IDs and key configuration chips are used to establish a plug-and-play secure connection to the Sigfox cloud to further ensure data exchange integrity and confidentiality. Regardless of whether the data frame is an upstream message or a downstream message, the STSAFE-A1SX security unit can generate and verify integrity evidence of the payload data as well as optional encryption or decryption information. From the time the chip is shipped to the end of its life cycle, confidential information such as keys is always stored in the security unit.

Laurent Degauque, Director of Marketing for Secure Microcontrollers for the STMicroelectronics Microcontroller and Digital Chip Group, said: "The STSAFE-A1SX is an industry standard certified tamper-resistant security unit. We support Sigfox by implementing Sigfox security services in this security unit. ReadyTM device vendors and Sigfox application providers enable advanced end-to-end security. STSAFE-A1SX makes Sigfox network data security even higher and simpler. Customers simply connect this security unit to a general-purpose microcontroller such as STM32. Can start developing application projects."
