
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) announced that it has expanded its optoelectronics portfolio with the release of a new high-speed silicon PIN photodiode with higher sensitivity to visible light, the VEMD5080X01. The Vishay Semiconductors VEMD5080X01 is available in a small 5mm x 4mm, 0.9mm height top-view surface mount package with fast switching speed and low capacitance for accurate signal detection in wearable devices and medical, industrial and automotive applications.
The device has a photosensitive area of 7.5 mm2, a reverse photocurrent of 45 μA and a dark current of 0.2 nA. The diode has a high irradiance and can detect visible and near-infrared radiation from 350 nm to 1100 nm. For green LEDs, the VEMD5080X01 is 30% more sensitive than the previous generation.
This photodiode can be used with Vishay's VLMTG1400 green LED. Its small size and high sensitivity enable thin sensor design for optical heart rate detection in wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smart watches. The device can also be used with Vishay's VSMD66694 660nm and 940nm two-color LEDs, which is ideal for SpO2 measurements in medical monitoring equipment. In addition, by using a dual-wavelength source, the device can be used for fast photodetection in smoke detectors and as a vehicle dust and particulate sensor when used with red diodes.
