Increased Sensitivity to Visible Light, Filters with IR Suppression, and Small SMD Packages

Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced that it has introduced two new high speed silicon PIN photodiodes with enhanced visible light sensitivity - VEMD5510C and VEMD5510CF - to meet the demand for reliable signal detection in wearable devices, medical and industrial applications. Vishay Semiconductors VEMD5510C and VEMD5510CF have filters that suppress infrared radiation and black packages that increase signal-to-noise ratio. They feature fast switching times and small capacitance in a small-sized top-view surface mount package.

The photodiode has a photosensitive area of ​​7.5 mm2, the VEMD5510C has a sensitivity range of 440 nm to 700 nm, the VEMD5510 CF has a sensitivity range of 440 nm to 620 nm, and the reverse photocurrents are 0.6 μA and 0.25 μA, respectively. The device's on-chip suppression filter eliminates non-visible light interference while the black package shields excess side light. By using these techniques, the spectral sensitivity of VEMD5510C to radiation over 800 nm in wavelength and VEMD5510 CF to radiation over 700 nm in wavelength is less than 5%, which is very close to the human eye.

The photodiode released today uses a small 5mm x 4mm package with a height of 0.9mm to enable a thin profile sensor design. The device is suitable for optical heart rate measurement in wearable devices such as fitness pedometers and smart watches, as well as medical biosensors connected to patient monitoring systems. In addition, these photodiodes can achieve fast photodetection in smoke detectors, ambient light detection for display brightness adjustment or dimming functions.

The photodiode meets RoHS and Vishay green standards, is halogen-free and has a moisture sensitivity level (MSL) rating of 4 in the J-STD-020 standard. It can be stored for 72 hours after opening the package.
