Vishay's new infrared receiver achieves the industry's thinnest record

Friday, July 27, 2018

The height of the side-view winged package is only 2.6mm, enabling front panel mounting in a 3mm frame.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced the expansion of its optoelectronics with two new series of small infrared (IR) receiver modules for flat panel TVs and displays for remote control applications - TSOP39xxxTR1 and TSOP59xxxTR1 combination. To achieve front panel mounting in the 3mm frame of these products, the Vishay Semiconductors TSOP39xxxTR1 and TSOP59xxxTR1 series devices are the industry's first TVCastSMD side-view, wing-mounted surface mount packages with a height of only 2.6mm.

In order to implement remote control functions on today's flat-panel TVs, it is usually necessary to use three optical devices, including an infrared receiver, a red LED, and an ambient light sensor. These devices must be mounted in a narrow frame or through a light guide to achieve light communication from back to front, but will shorten the receiving distance of the infrared receiver. The TSOP39xxxTR1 and TSOP59xxxTR1 series are housed in a TVCastSMD package that can be mounted on the PCB in a side-by-side arrangement and then placed into the frame so that the receiver can be placed close to the front panel of the frame for superior remote control performance.

To simplify the design, the two devices released today combine a photodetector, preamplifier circuit, and infrared filter in a 4-pin epoxy package. The infrared receiver uses a dual lens design that achieves high sensitivity, with typical radiation levels as low as 0.08mW/m2 and 0.20mW/m2, respectively. The device's supply voltage is 2.5V to 5.5V, the TSOP39xxxTR1 series has a supply current of 0.35mA, the TSOP59xxxTR1 series has a supply current of 0.7mA, the longest transmission distance is 45 meters, and the carrier frequency is 36kHz to 56kHz.

The TSOP39xxxTR1 and TSOP59xxxTR1 devices offer improved immunity to ambient light and are insensitive to supply voltage variations and ripple noise. There are four automatic gain control (AGC) versions for short pulse encoding and long pulse encoding. All receivers are RoHS and Vishay green and halogen free.
