Vishay's new thick film resistors improve measurement accuracy and save space while reducing system component count

Monday, July 23, 2018

Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced that it has introduced a new series of thick film surface mount chip resistors, RCWK0306, with a 4-terminal Kelvin connection and a power rating of 0.33W in a small form factor of 0306. The Vishay Dale RCWK0306 series is 3.3 times the power density of the 0603 pad size and can be used in communications, computer, industrial and consumer applications to save space and reduce component count.

Due to the high power density, this new family of devices can replace larger high-power components or multiple lower-power resistors, which reduces the board space and placement cost required, and makes the final product smaller and more light. In addition, the RCWK0306 series resistors reduce the mismatch with the thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of the PCB, thereby reducing the solder joint stress, and the reliability is superior to the thick film resistor of a larger size.

The resistors are connected in a 4-terminal Kelvin with a very low resistance of 0.01 Ω to 0.1 Ω for more accurate measurements with tolerances as low as 1%. These resistors are RoHS compliant, halogen free, and have a thick glaze film on high quality ceramics. The resistor is suitable for use as a current-sense resistor for DC/DC converters, voltage regulator modules and inverters in mobile phones, computers, air conditioners and heat pumps.
