Voltage Protection Devices: Automotive Compact High Reliability Chip Varistors

TDK Corporation has expanded its lineup of TDK chip varistors for automotive applications. The AVRH series has a maximum operating voltage of 19 V to 70 V and a capacitance range of 4.7 pF to 50 pF. This compact voltage protection device can be used in IEC 1005 (EIA 0402) due to its compact size of only 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm x 0.5 mm, which results in a 75% reduction in volume of new components over existing components with comparable performance, . The high reliability AVRH series is also available in an operating temperature range of -55 to 150 ° C and withstands 25 kV contact discharges in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2 and AEC-Q200 certified.

The new AVRH series uses TDK's unique coating technology to achieve high reliability required by the car. Therefore, the AVRH system is suitable for a wide range of automotive ECU and bus systems such as LIN, CAN, CAN-FD and FlexRay. In addition, the chip varistor can also be used in systems using BroadR-Reach, MOST or Automotive Ethernet.

In recent years, cars have been equipped with many additional features such as advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and in-vehicle infotainment system (IVI) networks, making it increasingly important to reduce ECU size and increase reliability. Therefore, ESD and surge protection devices also need to reduce the size and increase reliability. TDK will further increase its product lineup in terms of compactness, operating voltage and capacitance in order to support a wide range of automotive device designs.
