Voltage Protection Devices Compact High Reliability Chip Varistors for Automotive Applications

TDK Corporation has expanded its lineup of chip varistors for automotive applications. The AVRH Series products have a maximum operating voltage of 19 V to 70 V and a capacitance range of 4.7 pF to 50 pF. This compact voltage protection device can be used in IEC 1005 operating conditions (EIA 0402) due to its compact size of only 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm x 0.5 mm, which enables the new component to be reduced by 75% in volume compared to existing components with comparable performance . The highly reliable AVRH series also has an operating temperature range of -55 to 150 °C, withstands 25 kV contact discharge, conforms to IEC 61000-4-2 and is AEC-Q200 certified.

The new AVRH series uses TDK's exclusive coating technology to achieve the high reliability required by the car. Therefore, the AVRH system is suitable for various automotive ECUs and bus systems such as LIN, CAN, CAN-FD and FlexRay. In addition, this chip varistor can also be used in systems using BroadR-Reach, MOST, or automotive Ethernet.

In recent years, the car has been equipped with many additional functions such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

With (IVI) networks, it has become increasingly important to reduce ECU size and increase reliability. Therefore, ESD and surge protection devices also need to be reduced in size and increase reliability. TDK will further increase its product lineup in terms of compactness, operating voltage and capacitance to support a wide range of automotive device designs.
