Develops more reliable and cost-effective LED lighting applications using Microchip's continuous linear LED driver

Microchip Technology Inc. announced a new generation of continuous linear LED drivers for offline lighting applications. The CL88020 is an extension of Microchip's popular CL88XX family of products designed to directly drive a long series of low-cost LEDs from a 120 V AC input. With this product, customers can achieve high power factor (PF) without the need for switching power supplies that are typically required for LED lighting designs, enabling reliable and cost-effective compact LED lighting applications.

Keith Pazul, Microchip's director of marketing for analog, power and interface divisions, said: "The transition from traditional lighting to LED is getting faster and faster. Microchip offers a rich and diverse range of LED lighting products; customers are constantly looking for better electronic solutions. And our new device is in line with their needs.”

The CL88020 is designed to reduce the number of components in the driver circuit to achieve a very small and efficient design. The simpler the design, the easier it is to implement a single-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design without the need for high-voltage capacitors, transformers or inductors, electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters, or power factor correction (PFC) circuits. Compared with traditional LED solutions, this product not only reduces the size of the solution, but also reduces the total bill of materials (BOM) total cost.
