Intersil Introduces Industry's First Full HD LCD Video Processor Targeting Automotive Applications

Sunday, April 29, 2018

Highly-integrated TW8844 provides real-time display of rearview camera live video, making the ability to prevent reversing accidents 4 times the industry standard

Intersil, a subsidiary of Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a leading global semiconductor solutions provider, today announced the launch of the industry’s first full-HD LCD video processor specifically designed for automotive applications, connected to the latest generation of automotive SoCs ---TW8844. The highly integrated TW8844 builds on Intersil’s industry-leading automotive infotainment and display systems, and is the first high-definition (HD) 1080p LCD video with an analog video decoder, two scalar, and MIPI-CSI2 SoC interfaces. processor.

The TW8844 facilitates the transition from analog to digital camera systems and supports many video interfaces and resolutions of up to 1920 x 1080 full HD LCD panels.

Global automakers are beginning to equip new models with rearview camera systems. In accordance with the requirements of the US Children's Traffic Safety Law, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued regulations in March 2014 that require automakers to install "rear visibility" for cars weighing less than 10,000 pounds. Technology). The new FMVSS-111 regulation requires that when the driver reverses, he must be able to see the area behind the vehicle and minimize the blind area. The law aims to reduce casualties caused by reversing accidents, many of which involve children. According to FMVSS-111 law, from May 2018, all new cars sold in the United States must be equipped with a rearview reversing camera, and the rearview camera video must be displayed within 2 seconds after the driver hangs upside-down.

The current car audio body is prone to operating system (OS) software freezes and hangs, causing the display image to freeze, or preventing the rear view camera from displaying live video. Due to the increasingly complex operating systems that SoCs run, software freezes and hangs become more common. The TW884x eliminates this problem by monitoring the SoC and the camera output to determine if it is in a frozen or error state. If the TW884x detects any problems, it bypasses the SoC and instantly displays the rearview camera video.

Philip Chesley, senior vice president of precision products at Intersil, said: “The TW884x's freeze detection feature uses a hard-wired connection to trigger an interrupt signal in the event of a threshold violation to ensure that the rearview camera complies with FMVSS-111 regulations and displays live video instantly. In addition, the TW884x's rear view camera bypass architecture separates the camera-to-display signal path from the infotainment system, helping automakers more easily achieve the camera system's ISO 26262 functional safety rating."
