A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a type of semiconductor device that is widely used in the world of digital circuits. Manufactured by Altera, which is now part of Intel, these components are known for their flexibility and versatility. FPGAs are unique as they can be reprogrammed to desired application or functionality requirements after manufacturing. This capability to be configured by the customer or designer post-manufacturing, through a language known as Hardware Description Language (HDL), such as VHDL or Verilog, sets FPGAs apart from Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) which are custom manufactured for specific tasks. FPGAs contain an array of programmable logic blocks, and a hierarchy of reconfigurable interconnects that allow the blocks to be wired together, somewhat like one can do in a breadboard but with way more complexity and speed, enabling them to perform complex combinational functions or merely simple logic gates. Essentially, FPGAs can be programmed to execute a vast number of functions ranging from simple logic operations to acting as complex, multicore processors. They are used in various applications including signal processing, medical imaging, voice recognition, computer vision, and telecommunications. FPGAs are especially popular in prototyping parts of digital circuits to test designs before final production.
