Linear Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), introduced the LT8607, a 750mA, 42V input synchronous step-down switching regulator. The device's unique synchronous rectification topology provides 93% efficiency at 2MHz switching, allowing designers to avoid critical noise-sensitive frequency bands such as the AM radio band while achieving a very compact footprint. Burst Mode® operation keeps quiescent currents below 3μA in no-load standby conditions, making the device ideal for systems that are always on. Its 3V to 42V input voltage range is ideal for automotive applications, as these applications must be tuned for cold start and vehicle stop-and-go situations with minimum input voltages as low as 3.0V and load transients exceeding 40V. Its internal 1.2A switch provides up to 750mA of continuous output current. The LT8607 maintains a minimum differential voltage of only 250mV (at 500mA) in all cases, enabling excellent performance in the event of a car's cold start. Spread spectrum frequency modulation and special design techniques provide low EMI operation to minimize noise problems in many automotive and industrial environments. In addition, the fast minimum turn-on time is only 45ns, which allows the device to switch at a constant 2MHz frequency from 16V input to 1.5V output. The LT8607's 8-lead thermally enhanced 2mm x 2mm DFN or 10-lead MSOP package and high switching frequency (allowing the use of small external inductors and capacitors) provide a compact footprint and high thermal efficiency solution.
The LT8607 uses internal high-efficiency power switches for the upper and lower tubes to integrate the necessary boost diodes, oscillators, control and logic circuitry in a single chip. The low ripple burst mode operation maintains high efficiency at low output currents while allowing output ripple below 10mVP-P. Unique design techniques and new high-speed processes allow the device to achieve high efficiency over a wide input voltage range, while the LT8607's current mode topology enables fast transient response and excellent loop stability. Other features include internal compensation, power good flag, output soft start / tracking and over temperature protection.
The LT8607EDC is available in a 2mm x 2mm 8-lead DFN package and the LT8607EMSE is available in a thermally enhanced MSOP-10 package. The industrial temperature grade versions LT8607IDC and LT8607IMSE are tested and guaranteed to operate over the –40°C to 125°C operating junction temperature range.
