Melexis introduces second-generation Triaxis motor position sensors

Thursday, May 10, 2018

New generation product MLX90380 supports higher speed and more flexible off-axis installation

Melexis, a global microelectronics technology company, announced the launch of its second-generation motor position sensor (degoker) based on its patented Triaxis Hall magnetic sensing technology.

The new-generation MLX90380 single-chip solution can be used to measure the absolute angle of a motor and is suitable for all brushless motors including Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) and Brushless DC Motors (BLDC). The electrification of the car has given birth to a continuously growing number of relevant applications, and this MLX90380 provides an ideal solution.

The sensor's 2us input signal sample rate and 8us output signal refresh rate make it ideal for high-speed rotary motor applications such as automotive electric power steering (EPS) and supercharger applications; the MLX90380 provides sine and cosine proportional to VDD Analog signal output, support magnetic field intensity working environment of 10mT ~ 70mT, and can configure the magnetic field of XYZ three directions.

The MLX90380 is unique in that it can be mounted on the end of the shaft or on the side of the shaft. By simply selecting the correct product code and using the ring magnet on the rotor shaft and the side mounted MLX90380, the designer can now measure the rotor speed and position anywhere on the shaft.

Peter Vandersteegen, Melacore's product manager, commented on the new MLX90380 product: “This Triaxis®-based second-generation resolver shows that Melexis is taking a major step forward—especially in performance. In terms of installation flexibility, designers are able to provide high-performance rotary angle measurement solutions due to the designers' narrow space challenges in modern applications, especially in the automotive field.

The MLX90380's operating temperature is -40°C to +150°C, making it ideal for harsh applications such as industrial and automotive applications. The standard version is available in a small SOIC-8 package, while the fully redundant version is available in a SOIC-16 package. For non-PCB applications such as those installed directly in the motor, it is available in a DMP-4 package.
