Maxim Integrated MAX806RCPA+ Microprocessor Supervisory Circuit

The Maxim Integrated MAX806RCPA+ is a highly reliable microprocessor (µP) supervisory circuit designed to monitor power supplies and microprocessor activity in digital systems. It provides excellent circuit reliability and low cost by eliminating external components and adjustments when used with +5V-powered circuits.

This supervisory circuit significantly improves system safety by providing several key monitoring functions. The MAX806RCPA+ features a precision voltage monitor that keeps a watchful eye on the +5V power-supply voltage. This monitor guarantees that the system's voltage remains within acceptable limits, ensuring proper operation of the microprocessor and associated circuitry.

One of the standout features of this device is its ability to assert a reset signal whenever the VCC supply voltage declines below the reset threshold, which is factory-set at 4.65V. The reset signal remains asserted for at least 200ms after VCC has risen above the reset threshold, providing ample time for the system to stabilize before the processor begins execution. This reset timeout ensures that the microprocessor starts with a clean slate, greatly reducing the risk of software errors during power-up or brownout conditions.

The MAX806RCPA+ also includes a watchdog timer that monitors the microprocessor's activity. If the µP fails to provide a periodic signal to the watchdog circuit, indicating that the system has potentially become unresponsive or is operating abnormally, the MAX806RCPA+ will issue a system reset. This automatic reset helps to recover from software lockups or other faults that could otherwise lead to system failure.

Designed in a compact 8-pin DIP package, the MAX806RCPA+ is easy to integrate into existing designs. Its wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C ensures reliable operation even in harsh environments.
