Maxim Integrated DS2704RG+ Battery Pack Authentication IC

The DS2704RG+ from Maxim Integrated is a high-security, SHA-1 based battery pack authentication IC designed to provide a robust solution for safeguarding battery pack data and ensuring the authenticity of replaceable/rechargeable battery packs. This compact, feature-rich device is essential in applications where the integrity and safety of battery packs are of paramount importance, such as in medical devices, portable electronics, and electric vehicles.

At the heart of the DS2704RG+ is a SHA-1 hash algorithm that generates a unique 160-bit message authentication code (MAC). This MAC serves as a digital signature, which is virtually impossible to forge, thereby preventing the use of counterfeit battery packs that could potentially harm the host device or pose safety risks. The DS2704RG+ utilizes a challenge-and-response authentication protocol, where the host system sends a challenge to the battery pack, and the DS2704RG+ returns a valid response only if the pack is genuine. This ensures that only battery packs with the correct secret key can operate with the host system.

The device includes a nonvolatile (NV) memory section that can be used to store pack-specific data such as capacity, date of manufacture, and a unique serial number. This information can be permanently locked to prevent tampering and unauthorized alterations. The DS2704RG+ operates over a wide voltage range of 2.7V to 4.5V, making it suitable for single-cell Li+ or three-cell NiMH/NiCd applications.

With its small form factor, the DS2704RG+ comes in a compact 16-pin TSSOP package, allowing for easy integration into battery pack designs without taking up significant space. This device also supports a 1-Wire interface, enabling communication with the host system through a single data line plus ground, which simplifies the hardware design and reduces the overall system cost.
