Maxim Integrated MAX218EAP Dual RS-232 Transceiver

The MAX218EAP from Maxim Integrated is a high-performance dual RS-232 transceiver designed to meet the communication requirements for a variety of applications. This integrated circuit is part of Maxim’s family of transceivers that provide ESD protection and are intended for bidirectional communication between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data communication equipment (DCE).

Featuring a robust design, the MAX218EAP includes two drivers and two receivers, making it ideal for serial data transmission over RS-232 communication protocols. The device operates from a single +5V power supply, which is a standard feature in many microcontroller-based systems, and it is capable of running at data rates up to 120kbps.

One of the key features of the MAX218EAP is its integrated electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, which exceeds ±15kV using the Human Body Model (HBM). This ensures that the device remains reliable and stable in environments where ESD events may occur, reducing the risk of damage to the device and maintaining the integrity of data transmission.

The transceiver's receivers have a proprietary low-dropout transmitter output stage, providing full RS-232 performance from a +5V supply with a dual charge pump. The charge pump requires only four small 0.1µF capacitors for operation, which reduces the overall footprint and component count in the design.

Additionally, the MAX218EAP features a shutdown mode that reduces power consumption and extends battery life in portable applications. When in shutdown, the device's supply current drops to a mere 1µA, making it an excellent choice for power-sensitive designs.

The MAX218EAP is available in a 20-pin SSOP package, which is both compact and suitable for space-constrained applications. Its operating temperature range of 0°C to +70°C ensures that it can perform reliably in a wide range of environmental conditions.
