Maxim Integrated DS1305N Serial Alarm Real-Time Clock

The DS1305N by Maxim Integrated is a versatile serial alarm real-time clock (RTC) that provides a comprehensive timekeeping solution for a wide array of applications. Embedded systems, industrial controllers, and consumer electronics that require precise time tracking can benefit greatly from the features offered by the DS1305N.

This RTC is designed with a full binary-coded decimal (BCD) clock/calendar that is equipped with 56 bytes of NV (nonvolatile) SRAM. The clock/calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information, with the end of the month date automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap years. It operates in either 24-hour or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator, making it adaptable to various user preferences.

One of the key features of the DS1305N is its dual programmable time-of-day alarms and a programmable square-wave output. These alarms can be set to trigger on a combination of seconds, minutes, hours, and day, providing precise time-based event control. The square-wave output can be programmed for operation in a variety of modes, offering a selectable frequency output that can serve as a clock source for peripheral devices.

Communication with the DS1305N is established through a simple serial interface, which is compatible with most microcontrollers. The device supports both SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) modes 1 and 3, ensuring flexible integration into existing systems. The serial interface also minimizes the number of pins required for clock function, simplifying the design and saving valuable board space.
